Know About Allahabad



Allahabad, a city in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, has got its name from the term Ilahabad coined by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1583. Located at the confluence of Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati, better known as Triveni Sangam the district is famous for its rich cultural heritage and religious importance.Allahabad district has a rich heritage and is a favorite destination for pilgrims. Kumbh Mela of Allahabad is much sought after festival which helds after every twelve years. Triveni Sangam is the most sacred spot in Allahabad which refers to the confluence of three of the holiest rivers of the Hindu mythology, the holy Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati. Hindus from all over India flock to the city to offer prayers and take a dip in the holy waters.

Sangam
The Sangam is one of the most sacred places of the Hindus. Situated around 7 km from Civil Lines is Sangam, the meeting point of three holy rivers-Ganga, Yamuna, and the Saraswati. This is one of the most sacred places for Hindus. Sangam hosts the Kumbh Mela which helds after every twelve years.

Allahabad Fort
The strategic location made Akbar build the Allahabad Fort near the Sangam in AD 1583. Allahabad Fort is well decked with art, architecture, design and craftsmanship. The Indian Army now uses the Fort and only a part of it is open for the visitors. The imposing Fort has three galleries. Visitors can see Ashoka Pillar, Saraswati Kup and Jodhabai Palace.

Patalpuri Temple and Akshaya Vat
Patalpuri Temple is an underground temple located inside the Allahabad Fort. This is the place where Lord Rama worshipped. Akshaya Vat (meaning immortal tree) is one of the most valued tree for the Hindus which is located within the temple. A permit from the Ordnance Depot or the Tourist Office is required for visiting the Patalpuri Temple and the Akshaya Vat.

Anand Bhawan is the ancestral home of the Nehrus. This is the place that gives you a look of the lifestyles of a family that retained the status of the most important political dynasty in India. The Bhawan now houses one of the finest museums of India and a memorabilia of Nehru-Gandhi family. 

Swaraj Bhawan
This is the house where the former Prime Minister of India Mrs. Indira Gandhi was born. Today, the Bhawan houses the Jawaharlal Nehru Trust. Built by Pandit Moti Lal Nehru, the building was donated to the nation in 1930 to be used as the headquarters of the Congress Committee. 

How to get there

By Rail: Allahabad has four railway stations. Major trains on the broad-gauge Delhi-Kanpur Kolkatta line arrive at the main Allahabad Junctions.

By Road: Allahabad district is well connected to all the major cities of the state. Buses ply regularly to nearby towns of Varanasi, Kanpur & Lucknow.

Places to stay

Allahabad has many hotels to suit both budget and luxurious requirements of travelers. Chowk area feeds the requirements of budget travelers while Civil Lines taps mid-range and luxurious requirements.
